Alabama High School Football Head Coaches

Wayne Proffitt


Wayne Proffitt earned All-State honors in 1956 as a back at Emma Sansom High School. He was named to the Class 3A All-State team by the Birmingham News. Proffitt played in the Alabama All-Star Game in Tuscaloosa following his senior season.

Wayne Proffitt began his head coaching career in Georgia at Miller County High School in 1967. His teams, over a period of three seasons, finished 15-11-3. In 1972 he was the head football coach at Southwest Georgia Academy for one season with an 11-0 record and a Georgia State Championship.

In the fall of 1973, Proffitt landed in Alabama at Scott Prep in the AISA. Over the next five years his teams finished 42-13-2 and won another State Championship in his final year at the school.


He landed the head coach job at Lakeside Academy in Eufaula in 1979. He stayed for three season with a record of 17-14-2. He also coached basketball at Lakeside.

Coach Proffitt moved to Riverview Academy in Georgia for the 1982 season as the head football coach. He remained at the school for five season and a 37-16-3 record. His 1985 team lost in the State Championship game and completed the season with an 11-2 record.

1987 found Coach Proffitt back in Alabama at Auburn High School. Over the next seven seasons his teams finished 43-30 with three playoff appearances and two area titles.

He moved back to Georgia and became the head coach at Seminole County High School in 1994. Proffitt stayed at the school for five years with a record of 35-20.

The 1999 high school football season opened with Coach Proffitt at his alma mater, Emma Sansom High School, in Gadsden, Alabama. In five years his record there was 30-20.

His record as a head coach in Georgia was 98-47-6 in 14 seasons. In Alabama he recorded a slate of 133-82-4. Coach Proffitts combine record for both states stands at 231-129-10 in a total of 34 years as a head coach.
